Letter to Suzuki from Beatrice Lane
Meiji period, dated 1908 / Sheet, ink on paper
Letter of February 25, 1908 to Suzuki from the woman who would become his wife, Beatrice Lane (1878-1939), on the eve of his departure for England. Suzuki had been interpreting a lecture for his master, Engaku-ji abbot Sōen Shaku (1859-1919), given in 1906 - incidentally the year of the couple's first encounter. Their affection grew steadily up to his subsequent trip to England to attend an international conference on the history of religion in September 1908.
